He's going to be awfully cold dressed like that in the Ardennes in December 1944.

I suppose there must have been at some point given that the Ardennes Winter Campaign aka Battle of the Bulge involved the Germans retaking ground they had previously lost to the Allies!

On the other hand the period photo used as a backdrop IS from the Winter Offensive period, being from a series of German Propaganda pics of German troops moving past a knocked out American convoy.

No, thats why up until the German offensive it was called "The Quiet Front". Where only battle worn and green troops occupied towns and villages with a foxhole line out in front.
