My WWI Ancestors

Postby MONKEYBOY on Thu Feb 26, 2009 10:36 pm

I thought I would share my families WWI ancestory with you all, since it is of great pride for me although sad, I hope you enjoy this little bit of my military heritage.

Image
This is my 1st great uncle Pte Thomas Dixon who served with the 11th Batt S Royal Inniskillen Fusilliers, and was killed in action on July 1st 1916 the first day of the battle of the Somme.

These are the images of his death card that was sent to the family.

His Batt was base in Thiepval Wood and had to go over the top to take the objective of the Crucifix.

The casualties for that objective were very high which totaled

Killed 46
Died of wounds 2
Wounded 335
Missing presumed dead 6
Missing presumed wounded 9
Missing 179.

This is my 2nd Great Uncle Pte Peter Davidson who served with the Northumberland Fusilliers.
I Have not been able to get much info on Peter, all I know is he was gassed and died in 1922 aged 23 due to the effects of the gassing.

Image
This is a group photo of the platoon Peter served with taken somewhere in France 1915.

Image
This is my 3rd Great Uncle James lancaster, again I have no great deal of info at the moment, but again was killed in action on the 1st July 1916.

Another photo of James with some of his Brothers in Arms.

These are James's death cards.

I hope you enjoyed looking at these photos etc, and thank you for letting me share my Military Heritage with you all.

Thanks

Very nice matey and you're very lucky to have the photos. My Grandfather was plucked off the beach at Dunkirk and my Great-Uncle was KIA in Antwerp. All photos of them in their army days have disappeared into the ether and are nowhere to be found. :(

Red Cross Archieves - Great War Records

You will have to wait a while, until 2014, but this will be a fantastic research resource when it comes online.
It is reported that there are records which include the second world war and more recent conflicts.
